Wellspring Summer Camp

WELLSPRING SUMMER DAY CAMP PREPARES FOR A RECORD SETTING YEAR The popular Wellspring Summer Day Camp is anticipating another record-setting number of attendees this year. Last year's total was 568 youth. Of the attendees in 2012, 83% were from racial minorities; 83.5% from households with incomes classified as "extremely low" or "very low" by Federal Poverty Guidelines; 61.5% were from homes without two parents; and over 80% resided within a 2½ mile radius of the center of Fort Wayne. Wellspring is one of very few free summer day camp opportunities available in the city. Transportation is also provided at no cost to participants and approximately 60% of the campers use this option. The camp begins on June 12th and runs through July 25th, 9:00 a.m. -1:30 p.m., and reaches kids from 4 to 17. Wellspring continues to focus on summer learning (reading, math and critical thinking) in its camp. This is in recognition to research that shows 2/3 of the academic loss suffered by youth from homes with limited resources can be attributed to summer inactivity. Roving instructors lead activities on dance, music and yoga and each week the grade groups enjoy a field trip. Free lunch through the Fort Wayne Community School's Summer Lunch Program is provided each day as campers meet at Moody Park.
